Introduction

The registration of a new Public Folder store in POA can be used to increase the public folders' storage capacity. It may also apply when using exclusive Public Folder storage for a customer or a group of customers, depending on service plans.

Resolution

Exchange 2003

Each Exchange 2003 Back-end server already contains one Public Folder Store that was created during installation. To add another Public Folder Store, a new Public Folder Tree should be created, as each Public Folder Tree can be associated with only one Public Folder Store from each Back-end server.

Some Exchange 2003 clients (for example, Outlook, OWA) do not support multiple Public Folder Trees. Therefore, to increase the public folders' capacity in Exchange 2003, a new Back-end server must be added.

Exchange 2007

By default, the Exchange 2007 Mailbox server does not contain a Public Folder database. If you want to create a Public Folder database on the Mailbox server, we strongly recommend placing this database in its own storage group.

Some restrictions apply to Public Folders database in Exchange 2007:

  1. A Mailbox server can contain only one Public Folder database.

  2. If Continuous Replication (Local, Standby, or Cluster) is enabled for the storage group where the Public Folder database resides, then no additional Public Folder databases can be created in this Exchange organization.

The following section describes how to create an additional Storage Group for the Public Folders database:

  1. Log into an Exchange Mailbox server (e.g., EXMBX01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrators group.

  2. Run the Exchange Management Console: Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 > Exchange Management Console.

  3. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration, and then click Mailbox.

  4. In the result pane, select the server on which you want to create a new storage group.

  5. In the action pane, click New storage group. The New Storage Group wizard appears.

  6. On the New Storage Group page, complete the following fields:

    • Storage group name - Use this box to type the name of the new storage group.

    • Log files path - This box shows where the new storage group log files will be placed. To change the location of the log files for the new storage group, click Browse, and then select a new location.

    • System files path - This box shows where the new storage group system files will be placed. To change the location of the system files for the new storage group, click Browse, and then select a new location.

  7. Click New to create the storage group.

  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new storage group was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.

  9. Click Finish to complete the New Storage Group wizard. The new storage group appears in the work pane of the Exchange Management Console.

This section describes how to create a Public Folder database in a storage group created using the above-mentioned steps:

  1. Log on to Exchange Mailbox server (ex. EXMBX01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrators group.

  2. Run the Exchange Management Console: Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 > Exchange Management Console.

  3. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration, and then click Mailbox.

  4. In the result pane, select the mailbox server and then, in the work pane, select the storage group in which you want the new public folder database to be created.

  5. In the action pane, click New Public Folder Database. The New Public Folder Database wizard appears.

  6. On the New Public Folder Database page, complete the following fields:

    • Public folder database name - Use this box to type the name of the new public folder database.

    • Database file path - This box shows where the new public folder database will be created. To change the location of the Exchange database (.edb) file for the new public folder database, click Browse, and then select a new location.

    • Mount this database - Select this check box to mount the public folder database immediately after it is created. Mounting a database puts it online and making its data available to users.

  7. Click New to create the public folder database.

  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new public folder database was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.

  9. Click Finish to complete the New Public Folder Database wizard. The new public folder database appears under its storage group in the work pane of the Exchange Management Console.

Exchange 2010

Note: an Exchange 2010 server can contain only one public folder database.

This section describes how to create a Public Folder database on an Exchange 2010 server.

  1. Log on to Exchange Mailbox server (ex. EXMBX01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrators group.

  2. Run the Exchange Management Console: Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 > Exchange Management Console.

  3. Navigate to Organization Configuration > Mailbox.

  4. In the action pane, click New Public Folder Database.

  5. On the Introduction page, complete the following fields:

    • Public folder database name - Enter the name of the new Public Folder database.
    • Server name - Specify where to create the Public Folder database, click Browse to open the Select Mailbox Server dialog box, select the server where you want to create the public folder database, and then click OK.

  6. On the Set Paths page, complete the following fields:

    • Database file path - This box contains the default path to the database file. Type the desired location in the box or leave the default one.
    • Log folder path - This box contains the default path to the database log files. Enter the desired location in the box or leave the default one.
    • Mount this database - check the box to mount the database immediately after it is created.

  7. On the New Public Folder Database page, review your configuration settings. Click New to create the public folder database.

  8. On the Completion page, review the following, and then click Finish to close the wizard:

    • The Completed status indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully.
    • The Failed status indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.
  9. Click Finish to close the wizard.
