Resolution

After you install a Microsoft Exchange (Exchange 2003/2007/2010 Mailstore) service on the Exchange Backend (Mailbox) server, you may need to register additional resources such as a Mailbox Store in the POA system. This may be required before you can provide the service to resellers or to customers for provisioning of their mailboxes.

The article describes the procedure to create additional Mailbox Stores for Hosted Exchange services in POA.

Exchange 2003

This section describes how to create a Mailbox Store in an existing First Storage Group on an Exchange 2003 server:

  1. Log on to Exchange Back-end server (e.g. EXBE01) using an account belonging to the domain administrator's group.

  2. Run the Exchange System Manager: Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange > System Manager.

  3. In the console tree, expand Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Servers > EXBE01 > First Storage Group.

  4. Right-click First Storage Group, click New > Mailbox Store.

  5. Type the name of the new store (e.g. MBS01), and then click OK.

  6. Under First Storage Group, right-click MBS01, and then click Mount Store.

In the Exchange 2003 Enterprise version, only five stores of any type (Public Folders or Mailbox Stores) may be added to Storage Group. Therefore, when adding Mailbox Store in Exchange, make sure you do not exceed this Storage Group limit. If necessary, create one more Storage Group but no more then four per each Exchange Back-end server. The following section describes how to create an additional Storage Group:

  1. In the Exchange System Manager console tree, expand Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Servers > EXBE01.

  2. Right-click EXBE01, click New > Storage Group.

  3. Type the name of the new Storage Group (e.g. STG02), and then click OK.

In the Exchange 2003 Enterprise server, only four Storage Groups may be created.

Exchange 2007

Each Storage Group in Exchange 2007 can contain up to five databases; we strongly recommend placing each new database in its own Storage Group until the maximum number of Storage Groups is reached. The standard license for Exchange 2007 enables you to create up to five Storage Groups and to mount up to five databases. The enterprise license for Exchange 2007 enables you to create up to 50 Storage Groups and to mount up to 50 databases.

Therefore, before creating a new Mailbox Database, a new Storage Group should be created. The following section describes how to create an additional Storage Group:

  1. Log on to Exchange Mailbox server (ex. EXMBX01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrator's group.

  2. Run the Exchange Management Console: Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 > Exchange Management Console.

  3. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration, and then click Mailbox.

  4. In the result pane, select the server on which you want to create a new Storage Group.

  5. In the action pane, click New Storage Group. The New Storage Group wizard appears.

  6. On the New Storage Group page, complete the following fields:

    • Storage Group name - Type here the name of the new Storage Group.

    • Log files path - This box shows where the new Storage Group log files will be placed. To change the location of the log files for the new Storage Group, click Browse, and then select a new location.

    • System files path - This box shows where the new Storage Group system files will be placed. To change the location of the system files for the new Storage Group, click Browse, and then select a new location.
  7. Click New to create the Storage Group.

  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new Storage Group was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.

  9. Click Finish to complete the New Storage Group wizard. The new Storage Group appears in the work pane of the Exchange Management Console.

This section describes how to create a Mailbox Database in a Storage Group created on the previous step:

  4. In the result pane, select the mailbox server, and then in the work pane, select the Storage Group in which you want the new Mailbox Database to be created.

  5. In the action pane, click New Mailbox Database. The New Mailbox Database wizard appears.

  6. On the New Mailbox Database page, complete the following fields:

    • Mailbox Database name - Type here the name of the new Mailbox Database.

    • Database file path - This box shows where the new Mailbox Database will be created. To change the location of the Exchange database (.edb) file for the new Mailbox Database, click Browse, and then select a new location.

    • Mount this Database - Select this check box to mount the Mailbox Database immediately after it is created. Mounting a database puts it online and making its data available to users.
  7. Click New to create the Mailbox Database.

  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new Mailbox Database was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click *Back *to make any configuration changes.

  9. Click Finish to complete the New Mailbox Database wizard. The new Mailbox Database appears under its Storage Group in the work pane of the Exchange Management Console.

Exchange 2010

The Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is available in two server editions: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. Enterprise Edition can scale up to 100 databases per server; Standard Edition is limited to 5 databases per server. Note that Mailbox Databases are not directly bound to Mailbox Servers in Exchange Server 2010 and that Storage Groups are deprecated.

The following section describes how to create an additional Mailbox Database:

  1. Log on to Exchange Mailbox server (ex. EXMBX01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrator's group.

  2. Run the Exchange Management Console: Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 > Exchange Management Console.

  3. In the console tree, navigate to Organization Configuration > Mailbox.

  4. In the action pane, click New Mailbox Database. The New Mailbox Database wizard appears.

  5. On the Introduction page, type a name for the new Mailbox Database in the Mailbox database name field. Click Browse to locate the server on which you will create the database, select the server, and then click OK. Click Next.

  6. On the Set Paths page, click Browse if you want to change the location of the Database file path. Then click Browse under the Log folder path to change the location of the log folder path for this Mailbox Database. Select the Mount this Database check box if you want to mount this database. Mounting a database puts it online, making its data available to users. Click Next.

  7. On the New Mailbox Database page, click New to create the Mailbox Database.

  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new Mailbox Database was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.

  9. Click Finish to complete the New Mailbox Database wizard. The new Mailbox Database appears on the Database Management tab.
