Question

A customer added the domain customer.com in OA and created website on it using Linux or Windows Shared Hosting service. A customer wants to create and manage alias for their http://customer.com website in OA Control Panel as http://new-customer.com. Is it possible?

Answer

The ability to create website aliases for Linux and Windows shared hosting is available since OA 5.4 Update 10.

Note: in OA 5.4 the Domain Aliases feature works only in the Linux Shared Hosting Standard service and does not work in the Linux Shared Hosting NG service. In OA 5.5 it works for both types of Linux shared hosting.

In OA < 5.4.10 website alias may be created through the Domain Parking service using 'Frame Forwarding' or 'Standard Forwarding' resources. So, provider needs to include resource based on the Parked domains Resource Class in OA Service Template.

A customer may create website based on the customer.com domain, then add the new-customer.com domain in OA Customer CP and provision Frame Forwarding or Standard Forwarding service on it so that the http://new-customer.com website will be forwarded to http://customer.com.

The main difference between two types of forwarding is the URL which will be displayed in web browser when visiting forwarded domain. In case Standard Forwarding is used and visitor opens http://new-customer.com, the web browser will show http://customer.com. In case Frame Forwarding is used and visitor opens http://new-customer.com, the target website http://customer.com will be opened in browser frame and browser will show http://new-customer.com URL.
