Symptoms

File manager is being used to change permissions on a file in Windows Shared hosting webspace.

Originally permissions look as follows (this is just an example):

A permissions is changed, e.g. "Read" permission from application pool user

"Get info" shows that the permission is immedieately restored.

Changes that add permission are saved.

Cause

Some permissions are inherited from the top level folder and cannot be revoked even from Windows Explorer (Unless "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" is cleared in "Advanced" per technet

Resolution

An internal request for OA to be able to revoke such inherited permissions has already been submitted to Maintenance team. Its internal ID is POA-81699. Please use this ID and contact your Account Manager to track the progress of the request.

Workaround

A. Review permissions on top level folder and if necessary, revoke permission on folder level (this may break some functionality of the website).

B. Deny specific permission directly on the server.
